60 Million Computers…say what

60 Million
Lenovo released this press release a little while ago (I copied and pasted it below). The numbers of this article are very astounding, 60 million ThinkPads? That would be one in five Americans on average has owned a ThinkPad laptop. The crazy part is this is just talking about the ThinkPad line, otherwise known as the business standard. Half of Lenovo’s laptops are IdeaPad models that do not count towards this number.
Other than just pointing out this major milestone, Lenovo has decided to add the NVIDIA Optimus Technology to the popular T410, T510, and T410s. While Optimus Technology may sound like something complicated, is just means that it has two graphics cards. One of them is discrete with its own graphics RAM while the other one is integrated in the chipset. The motherboard can then switch between the two graphics cards depending on what the current situation demands. The discrete graphics card offers higher performance at the expense of battery life.  So when working on something that does not need a high end graphics card such as a word document, the lower end graphics card will be engaged so more battery life can be achieved. This really makes a difference in laptops like the T410s which typically do not have a discrete graphics card because the smaller structure cannot usually hold it, and do not have the battery capacity to match it. This allows these thinner machines to still keep battery life high when using applications that are not graphics demanding.

Killer Graphics Performance Plus Extreme Battery Life
NVIDIA Optimus technology helps make graphics automatic, instantaneous and seamless. Users no longer have to manually force switching to reduce performance and save battery life. Now they can have extended battery life and electrifying multimedia performance. By switching automatically between high performance and energy saving graphics, ThinkPad laptops with Optimus achieve up to 33 percent longer battery life over discrete only mode2. That adds up to one extra hour of battery life per charge3. ThinkPad also supports Optimus technology to drive four displays via select ThinkPlus docks.
“New technologies like NVIDIA Optimus are making ThinkPads even smarter,” said Rene Haas, general manager, Notebook Products, NVIDIA. “Never before has there been a solution that so effectively eliminates the tradeoffs between riveting graphics performance and long battery life. Visual content is the most popular and important form of data today, and we’ve built the NVIDIA NVS 3100M graphics CPU to be the perfect CPU for the task.”

How To Replace A Laptop Keyboard

Saturday, April 19, 2014

These instructions will help you to remove and replace faulty keyboards on various laptops, but if your keyboard is missing just a key, it’s not necessary to replace the whole keyboard. What you have to do, is to look for the specific key that is missing and replace it on the keyboard. Follow these steps only if you want to completely replace your faulty laptop keyboard with a new one.

Step 1
Begin the process of removing the faulty laptop keyboard by inserting a small Flathead screwdriver under the keyboard bezel and carefully lift it up, then use your fingers to continue releasing the plastic latches, until the keyboard bezel is completely removed from the laptop. When doing this you have to be careful because on some models the keyboard bezel might be connected to the motherboard, so if you accidentally pull the cable connecting the bezel to the motherboard, please connect it back. In this case it is not necessary to disconnect the keyboard bezel from the motherboard in order to remove and replace the keyboard. What you have to do is just put the keyboard bezel aside so that you can access the keyboard screws.

Step 2
Remove the screws (about two or three depending on the laptop model) securing the keyboard at the top and carefully lift up the keyboard from the laptop case.

Step 3
The keyboard is connected to the motherboard by a flat ribbon cable, unlock the connector, to unlock the connector carefully move the connector lock 2 - 4 millimeters up and after that pull the keyboard cable from the connector.

Step 4
The faulty keyboard is now completely detached from the motherboard

Step 5
To install the new keyboard, just follow the above mentioned steps in the reverse order.

Apple MacBook Pro A1286 15 4 inch

Friday, April 18, 2014

MacBook Pro A1286 (15.4-inch)

From the outside, the latest 15-inch MacBook Pro closely resembles its predecessor. It sports the same solid aluminum unibody enclosure with the indented thumb scoop for opening the lid, the same huge touchpad, and the same stiff button that makes tapping and swiping the touchpad with your fingers easier than depressing the button. The big glossy screen still has a resolution of 1440 by 900 pixels, and all ports--including the MagSafe power port, gigabit ethernet, FireWire 800, two USB ports, and separate audio-in and -out ports--are still grouped together on the left side of the case. The iSight camera is positioned in the same spot, as is the 8X SuperDrive. Nevertheless, Apple has introduced significant changes to the new model.

A new Secure Digital (SD) card slot lets you transfer files to your Mac and boot the notebook. Apple says that the MacBook Pro supports the following cards: SD (which holds 4MB to 4GB of data), SDHC (which holds 4GB to 32GB of data), microSD (with an adapter), and miniSD (with an adapter). It does not support SDXC, a new card specification that theoretically can support up to 2TB of storage; this card is not yet available on the open market, however. Users--especially photographers and videographers--who have invested in ExpressCard hardware will lament Apples decision to eliminate the ExpressCard/34 slot. The latest 17-inch MacBook Pro retains its ExpressCard/34 slot.

For the 15-inch MacBook Pro, Apple has abandoned replaceable batteries in favor of the same battery technology that it introduced earlier this year for the 17-inch MacBook Pro--a larger, flatter, more compact, and longer-lasting lithium-polymer battery. The new battery contains a chip that monitors things like charge level and temperature, and communicates this information to the computer. According to Apple, the technologys ability to determine and maintain the optimal charging currentenables the new battery to survive 1000 charges, or approximately five years, before reaching 80 percent of original capacity; conventional rechargeables have a typical lifespan of 300 recharges. In the Macworld Labs tests of battery life, the new battery held out for ran an average of 4 hours. PC Worlds Battery tests (running Windows Vista in Boot Camp mode) didnt shine as favorable for the high-end MacBook Pro we tested. It only lasted 3 hours, 40 minutes in PC Worlds Battery drain tests. Thats almost a half-hour less than the average all-purpose laptop running the same test.

  • Corsair Hydro Series H80 and H100 Cooling Performance Profiles

Many people have been hesitating on which of these 2 amazing Corsair cooling systems, namely the  Corsair Hydro Series H80 and H100 to choose. Well, this post gives you some idea on the 2 products. So, take a look so that you can decide which is most suitable for your system.

The Hydro Series™ H80 and H100 CPUss coolers both have an integrated push button on the top of the cooling unit which controls the cooling performance. It allows you to easily switch between three cooling performance profiles. The first mode is quiet mode which allows for quiet operating. If you want better cooling performance you can hit the button which will select the balanced profile. This profile is increases the noise level slightly but gives better cooling performance. Finally, you have the performance profile for the best performance, this profile is the loudest.

In order to make sure you are able to take advantage of these profiles, you must have the fans plugged into the cooling unit of the H80 or H100. The H80 will allow you to control both of the fans in push pull and the H100 will allow you to control the two fans that are included with the H100, as well as an additional two fans for push pull configurations.

Each profile has a set RPM range that it will run the fans at. The fan speed will increase to the upper RPM limit of the selected profile as the liquid temperature rises and lower the fan speed when the temperature allows it. This allows the fans to run quieter.

Profile Description LED Pattern Fan speed
Quiet Minimum noise profile. Quiet 900 rpm with upper fan speed limit set to 1300 rpm
Balanced Default performance profile. Will operate fans to balance thermal performance and acoustic noise. Balanced 1300 rpm with upper fan speed limit set to 2000 rpm
Performance Maximum cooling performance profile. Performance 1600 rpm with upper fan speed limit set to 2700 rpm

This chart below shows the RPM of the fans as the internal coolant temperature rises all the way up to 40°C.
