Dell Latitude C610 Laptop A Mothers Review On A Cheap Yet High Performing Laptop Computer

I need to disclose upfront that Im not highly technologically advanced. I know what basic features that I need in a product and I am pretty good about researching and finding them for the best price. My son insisted that he needed a sleek, lightweight, fast running dependable laptop on which he could surf the web, download music and games, do his homework, email, IM and take notes.

I insisted that although I was willing to oblige him this request, I could not justify spending more than a couple hundred dollars (or less hopefully) on a laptop that he might lose or break in no time at all. After spending hours researching cheap dependable laptop and notebook computers on the web, what I came up with was the Dell Latitude C610 model. We both could agree on this model because it suited both of our needs.

The Latitude C610 is sleek and very lightweight (under six pounds) and the battery last a whopping full four and one half (4 1/2) hours on one charge. (Even my new, expensive laptop cant compare there). The Latitude has an Intel Pentium III 750 MHz processor with 256 MB memory. This makes it a pretty quick machine. The keyboard is roomy but very quiet. The unit includes both a pointing stick and a touchpad, which is pretty rare in this class of computer. This little laptop surfs the web very quickly and doesnt get bogged down or slow even though he downloads tons of music and games on it. It has a CD drive for his games also.

The best part about the laptop to me was that it us well under $200. I got a model with a few extras for about $185. Its a really nice laptop which I often use on business trips because it is so portable. My son thinks its the bomb and doesnt like the lend it out.

Theres no question that the Macbook Air is the gold standard of tiny lap top computers. Apple has stuffed tons of features and power into a machine so slim it can fit into a large envelope. But, this tiny machine has a very high price tag, averaging about $1700. Many consumers love the technology but can not afford this high price. If youre attracted to the Mac for its size, but would like a cheaper alternative, take a look at the Asus EEE laptop computer.

Size And Weight: If your quest for a very small computer is what attracted you the Air, you should know that the Asus is an even smaller machine at only 1.383 x 8.823 x 6.5." It weighs a mere 2 pounds, (a pound lighter than the Mac). The EEE is about the size of a paperback while the Apple is the size of a text book (although it is the thinner of the two).

These two models differ in several ways, as follows: The Macbook has a 13.3" LCD display, 2GB of Ram, an 80GB hard drive and runs on the Leopard operating system. The Asus has a 7" LCD display, 512 MB of Ram, a 2-4 GB hard drive and runs on a custom Linux Distro operating system.

Price: Pricing is the hugest difference between the two models. The Mac starts at over $1,000 and the loaded model is $1700 or more. You can generally pick up the EEE for somewhere between $250 and $400 if you know where to look.

Bottom Line: Which model is best for you depends on what you are looking for in a computer. If youre just looking for a small computer on which to complete basic functions, there seems no reason to pay the extra money. The cheaper version is great for students. However, if you truly need the additional memory or you prefer the Leopard operating system, you will probably prefer the Apple.
